One solution to the lack of serial ports
If you have multiple Macs in the home, then you probably have a spare serial port on one of them that you could use for the weather station like this :

Older Macs are really good for this purpose,
and AppleTalk is so cheap and simple.

Please note that the DavisRead applet for the tutorial must be modified to allow the Davis to be on one Mac and XTension on another.
